Investigation of CeO2, MoO3, and Ce2(MoO4)3, Synthesized by the Pechini Method, as Catalysts for Fructose Conversion

Cerium oxide (Ce100), molybdenum (Mo100), and a material containing Ce Mo (CeMo) were synthesized by the Pechini method, using glycerol as polyol. These materials applied for fructose conversion in an aqueous medium. The characterization results show formation of cerium molybdate (Ce2(MoO4)3) CeMo. Ce100 presented good thermal stability, Mo100 sublimation MoO3 polymolybdates was verified. CeMo exhibited mass loss 19%, associated with polymolybdate species. Additionally, existence Bronsted Lewis acid sites confirmed, addition to efficient strategy increase acidity. Regarding catalytic activity (150 °C 0.5 6 h), low conversions high selectivity 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). For Mo100, conversions, significant insoluble materials, detected. CeMo, beyond activity, lower noted. In this case, toward products from retro–aldolic route 5-HMF obtained. indicate that main factor influencing is adequate combination sites. Recycling experiments carried out, stability observed four cycles, confirming robustness system.
